Longevity Valley, extending vertically over 2,000 meters in depth and about 200 meters in height, features lush woods and oddly-shaped rocks, making itself a wonder r of rainforest According to the natural terrain, the scenic area of Longevity Valley breaks up into the entrance section, the valley source section and the valley scenery tour line. The prime landscapes include: Mango Forest, Century-old Ancient Trees, Three Reclining Longevity Pines, “Longevity-Wish Hall”, “Longevity Staircase”, etc.
At the entrance of Longivity Valley stands a memorial archway of architectural style Ming and Qing Dynasties (primitive simplicity and elegance). Four characters“ao shan shou gu”on the wall (literally the four characters is turtle mountain and longevity valley) were inscribed by the famous calligrapher Wu dongming in Hainan. As for the reason, it is legendarily said that, when Guanyin arrived at the South China Sea riding on a giant turtle, she found out that the place was beautiful and auspicious and people living here were all over a hundred years old. The giant turtle drank the water of the South China Sea, laid down and became the Mountain Nanshan. It is interesting that the vertical view of Nanshan Mountain looks like a turtle or Chinese character “Ao”, a symbol of longevity in ancient times, which explains the source and meaning of the name “Ao Shan Shou Gu”, that is, “a place with longevity”. By drinking the spring water which streams in the mountain and irrigates the land, the local people are believed to live much longer.
A Longevity Culture Festival is held every year in Nanshan Cultural Tourism Zone. In the festival themed “longevity, health, life, sports and travel”, rounded cultural activities are organized, among which, “centenarians’ climbing Nanshan on foot”, “photo exhibition of a hundred longevity elders” and “large-scale theatrical performances” are the most influential.
